Stop The Sewage!

The River Weaver flows through the heart of Mid Cheshire. Unfortunately, so do thousands of tonnes of sewage. United Utilities oversaw the spillage of just under 3,700 hours of sewage into the River Weaver in 2022.

When standing for election to Chester West & Chester Council, Jack beat the drum relentlessly to protest against the scale of sewage spillage into the River Weaver. According to the most recent stats, 400 tonnes of sewage over 3,700 hours have been spilled into the Weaver. If you thought that stank, people in Mid Cheshire can expect a 7.9% hike in their annual water bill, rising to an average figure of £481 per year!

It appears that Mid Cheshire residents are covering the cost increase, not United Utiliities. According to their most recent projections, total shareholder dividends of £113 million over the most recent 6 months will EXCEED profits of £90 million.

Our water companies are the Schrödinger’s cat of utilities. When they should be extracting the urine out of our rivers, they’re extracting the urine out of their customers instead. They should not be paying dividends whilst neglecting our infrastructure. If you elect me as your next MP, I will campaign for our water companies to be transformed into public benefit companies, with stricter oversight by a new regulatory body to replace OFWAT.
