Cheshire West & Chester Liberal Democrats have condemned three council motions set for 9 February, accusing their proposers of misrepresenting a children’s Storyhouse event and stoking fear over non-existent issues. The party is calling for a named vote.

Cheshire West and Chester Liberal Democrats have criticised three motions due to be debated at the Council meeting on 9 February, accusing their proposers of misrepresenting the facts, stoking fear, and distracting from the real crises facing the borough.

Storyhouse targeted with misleading claims

One of the motions centres on a children’s event at Storyhouse which has been wrongly portrayed as inappropriate or sexualised. In reality, the event simply helps children understand that families come in different forms - a basic fact of modern life and something explicitly covered by the National Curriculum.

Children encounter classmates from a wide range of family backgrounds every day. Helping them understand that difference exists is about inclusion and safeguarding, not sex education.

Schools are already required to teach about different family structures, and Storyhouse is supporting that work at a time when schools are under severe financial pressure. Rather than attacking a valued cultural institution, councillors should be thanking it for stepping in where resources are stretched.

Had the Reform UK and Independent councillors proposing the motion spoken to the organisers, they would have known this. Instead, they have chosen to rely on dog-whistle politics to create the false impression that children are being taught about sexual relationships.

Scaremongering over changing rooms

The two further motions should not be debated at all. They are based on speculation rather than evidence, exploiting the absence of clear national guidance to whip up fear.

There is no evidence of offences occurring in public changing rooms in Cheshire West and Chester, nor are Liberal Democrats aware of any mixed-sex changing facilities on council-run premises. Raising alarmist claims without facts does nothing to improve safety - it simply targets a minority group for political gain.

Publicly elected representatives have a responsibility not to use their platform to vilify people or manufacture threats where none exist.

Call for a named vote

Given the seriousness of the claims being made and the potential harm they cause, the Liberal Democrats are calling for a named vote on all three motions.

Residents deserve to know which councillors are engaging in culture-war politics — and which are focused on holding the Labour administration to account for the real issues affecting people’s daily lives: deteriorating roads, unacceptable delays in EHCPs, and a deepening crisis in SEND provision.

Comment from the Liberal Democrats

Rob Herd, Chair of Cheshire West & Chester Liberal Democrats, said:

“This council should be focused on fixing potholes, supporting schools, and making sure children with SEND get the help they are legally entitled to - not attacking a children’s event at Storyhouse or spreading fear about problems that don’t exist.

Storyhouse is doing exactly what the National Curriculum expects, and doing it well. What we’re seeing instead is political theatre - using dog-whistle language to divide communities rather than solve problems.

We’re calling for a named vote so residents can see clearly who is serious about improving Cheshire West and Chester, and who would rather play culture-war games.”

Dear Andrew Cooper MP,

We the undersigned, implore you to vote against this Labour Government's plans to tighten the eligibility criteria for Personal Independence Payments, should they be brought to a parliamentary vote.

According to the most recently available data from the Department of Work and Pensions, approximately 5,500 people recieve PIP here in Mid Cheshire. 3,000 claim the Enhanced rate and 2,500 claim the Standard rate. If you vote to increase the thresholds for points scored per daily living activity, almost 2,500 PIP claimants would lose their disability benefits altogether. 85% of those who claim the standard rate would see their disability benefits disappear.

For many people, the application process is a daunting mountain of paperwork, built on a perception of mistrust. Disabled people, many of whom either want to work but can't, or are in some form of work, are heavily dependent on PIP to help with the extra costs associated with their disability. If these benefits are taken away, it could lead millions of disabled people to destitution.

Without this support, disabled people could be forced into working more hours in their current job, or into occupations that are simply not suitable for their disability. In turn, employers may be hesitant to hire disabled people, due to the increased risk of absence associated with disabled workers.

Everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to live, and we fully support the national ambition to build more homes. But we must learn from the mistakes of earlier Tory and Labour administrations: new development has to be sensitive, sustainable and matched by the right infrastructure from day one. This is an opportunity to set a gold standard for people-centred, climate-ready neighbourhoods—urban and rural alike. Handled well, we can give our children the chance to build their futures where they grew up, while safeguarding the countryside and revitalising our towns.

Protecting our historic villages — and improving our towns:

• Respect village character. Future schemes must enhance the unique heritage of our rural communities—from Burton, Farndon, Kelsall and Tarvin to Tattenhall—so that new buildings sit comfortably alongside historic streetscapes.

• Phase growth sensibly. Introducing housing in carefully planned stages will give newcomers time to integrate and help parish councils plan community activities and support networks.

• Level up our towns. Chester, Neston, Ellesmere Port, Northwich and Winsford face different pressures: brown-field regeneration, town-centre renewal and high street vitality. We will champion designs that revive empty plots, add green space and create vibrant, walkable neighbourhoods.

Infrastructure first, not years later:

• Transport, health and education up front. GP surgeries, dental practices, primary school places and frequent, reliable public-transport links must be delivered in parallel with house-building—and funded by developers, not council-tax payers.

• Modern drainage and digital connectivity. Flood-resilient drainage, gigabit-speed broadband and EV-charging hubs should be treated as standard utilities in every scheme.

Homes our young people can actually afford:

• Genuinely affordable mix. A much higher share of each development must be priced for local key workers and young families, enabling them to stay near friends, relatives and jobs instead of being priced out to neighbouring counties.

• Lifetime design. Adaptive layouts and accessible standards will let residents stay in their homes as needs change, easing future pressure on social-care budgets.

Zero-carbon, future-proof design:

• Energy-efficient builds. From heat-pump-ready heating systems and rooftop solar to high-performance insulation, every new home should be built to meet net-zero carbon emissions.

• Biodiversity net-gain. Green corridors, hedgerow restoration, wetland preservation and tree planting will protect the farmland that underpins Cheshire’s rural economy and natural beauty, including the Dee Estuary.

Next steps

Cheshire West and Chester Liberal Democrats will examine the Council’s full proposals as soon as they are published and issue a detailed public response, highlighting the plans that meet these tests and the areas that require revision.

I'm an avid cyclist, and during this heatwave, it has been genuinely been so wonderful to see so many people in Northwich get on their bikes and ride. There are parts of the town well served by cycle lanes, but we can do better!

Parts of the A556 Northwich Bypass have smooth, widened cycle lanes, to make a greener commute more practical, but in my honest opinion, riding on the eastbound path between Sandiway and Hartford is difficult. It is narrow, riddled with potholes, placed far too close to the shrubbery and currently has a fallen tree blocking it. As a major commuter route connected to Kingsmead, local businesses like Roberts Bakery & Morrisons Gadbrook, Leftwich High School and to Hartford Station, a fully upgraded cycle route between Sandiway and would be of huge benefit to Northwich as a whole.

As most of you know the result for the Runcorn and Helsby by-election was Friday morning and not the result we Liberal Democrats were hoping for. This is mainly due to the time and effort put in by all the volunteers, which deserved a better result. The dreaded squeeze.

It was not all bad. We have new members, plenty of learning and I personally got to know a few more Lib Dems in the wider area. I also will say, as any election, there are ups and downs but I honestly really enjoyed it all. Lastly, I want to thank everyone who contributed in any shape or form.

Onwards and upwards.

Reform's success in Runcorn & Helsby was not the only story. The Liberal Democrats are cementing themselves as the progressive alternative to a dying Tory party, and populist far right Reform UK Ltd. We took control of councils in Cambridgeshire, Oxfordshire and neighbouring Shropshire. The Lib Dems are now the largest party in Devon, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire & Hertfordshire; and the second largest party in Buckinghamshire, Cornwall, County Durham, Kent & Warwickshire.

This could not have been done without the dedication of our members and volunteers all over the country. Knocking on doors and delivering leaflets all year round, and not just at election time.

At Cheshire West & Chester Lib Dems, we campaign for liberal values, as the antidote to Nigel Farage's simplicity and Labour's complacency. Voters are looking for a progressive alternative to a political climate that keeps steering right, and you could be part of that change.
